Four Ways to Celebrate Cinco De Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is almost here, so we thought we’d give you a little history lesson before sharing our favorite Mexican restaurants in Williamsburg. We hope you enjoy these four ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Williamsburg!

It’s a popular misconception that the fifth of May is Mexico’s Independence Day. In reality, it’s a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War of 1862. Learn more about the Battle of Puebla here.

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Mexico with military parades, recreations of the Battle of Puebla and other festive events. In the United States, the holiday has evolved to become a tribute to Mexican culture and heritage, with some of the largest festivals held in places like Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.

In Williamsburg, we are lucky enough to be home to many wonderful, family-run Mexican restaurants that boast traditional homemade dishes that have guests coming back for more. Here are our four favorites—which one will be yours?

Had a wonderful dinner here! The fish tacos were excellent. The pico was fresh and the tilapia was perfectly prepared. Maria was a great server and tended to us with a great smile! (Behind the mask, of course?) Give this place a try, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed! – Clem S.

Wonderful atmosphere, good food, and great service. We ate here after shopping at the Premium Outlets. We live in Richmond, but will eat here again next time we’re back in Williamsburg. – Cara K.

First of all, it’s super close to the Williamsburg outlet mall. Second, they have a great drink menu and the BEST margaritas. The ingredients are fresh from the corn chips to the chicken and steak they put in the burritos. Just an all around excellent experience. Andrea, our server, did a tremendous job. We took our lunch on the patio. The HUGE burritos were 10” and well-priced and 14 oz $5.49 margaritas. Skip everything else. Come here. – Patrick H.

Taqueria Maria Bonita

This bright, cheerful Mexican restaurant has wonderful service and excellent specials made from scratch.

Best Mexican food on the East Coast! Tamales are hand-made and better than Mom used to make in Texas. Service and prices are fantastic. Highly recommended! Special shoutout to our waitress Amanda! Great service! – Mark M.

We stopped here at the suggestion of a friend and are so glad we did! The food and service was excellent! The kids said their nachos were “amazing”.  Everything was tasty and fresh but I especially liked the fresh corn tortillas and delish churros. Very clean and modern open kitchen. – Brittney B.

This restaurant is the best! They are always so friendly and engaging. My husband and I appreciate the family like atmosphere and service. The tacos are the bomb, but so is everything else we have tried. More than a restaurant…they are great people that run this place. We are so thankful to have found such a gem! – Brittany H.

By far the best Mexican restaurant we have ever been to! We came in to visit Williamsburg and we’re looking for a bite to eat when we came upon this restaurant. They make fresh guacamole at your table and the food is absolutely amazing as is the service. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you happen to be in the area especially with kids. – Justin U.

First time eating here and I ordered to go. Everything was delicious. Ordered shrimp tacos, chili Rellenos and a Shredded Quesadilla. Everything was so good. I enjoyed the shrimp tacos a lot and the sauce that came with it was spicy (and I love spice). The guacamole was great as well. Will be back for sure!!! – Brianne A.

Delicious food with generous portions! The staff is very polite and attentive. Huge margaritas and a large selection of alcohol, whiskey, and beer. Excellent service and COVID protocols are in place. – Cherice W.

Absolutely amazing. Mexican food is definitely my biggest go-to, and this place blew my mind! Great prices, great portion sizes and honestly THE best spot for burritos I’ve tasted since I left Vegas. If you find yourself in the Williamsburg area, do not skip on these guys and gals!

Someone suggested we go here for my birthday, and I am glad they did! The food was delicious, and there were many people on the staff who made sure we had what we needed. Everyone working there was really nice and they came to sing to me for my birthday. I had a great time and would definitely go back! – Rachel

I have been a loyal customer of this lovely establishment for several years now and have nothing but great things to say. The service is top of the line. I feel like I’m family every time I eat there. The food is authentic and delicious. The margaritas are unique and amazing each time, too! I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good place to take a friend or family to a quality meal. – Erin B.
