Outdoor Activities to Check off Your List this Fall

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”

–Albert Einstein

One of the reasons we love fall here in the ‘Burg is that it’s such an easy time of year to enjoy all the gifts that nature has to offer. And Williamsburg has created plenty of ways for us to get outdoors and feel alive!

Here are our favorite ways to revel in the great outdoors:

Ride Your Bike.

We are huge fans of the walking and biking trails you can find coming in and out of Williamsburg. One of our favorites and the closest to King’s Creek is the Colonial Parkway, a scenic, 23-mile roadway that connects Williamsburg to Yorktown and Jamestown. This unique three-lane roadway ties our cultural sites to local wildlife and pristine natural environments, and cyclists love its natural beauty.

Go on Horseback.

If you’re an equine lover, try touring Greater Williamsburg, Virginia, by horseback! Lakewood Trails offers relaxing guided horseback tours through the woods of Williamsburg, no experience necessary! Another wonderful option is to ride the bridle trails at York River State Park, where the unique makeup of the landscape offers a diverse ecosystem waiting to be discovered.

Test the Waters.

Almost nothing is more invigorating than getting out on the water in great weather, and in Williamsburg, your options are many. Try kayaking or canoeing through a gorgeous state park, go on a sightseeing cruise with the Yorktown Schooner Alliance or a sailing excursion with Williamsburg Charter Sails, or simply go swimming.

King’s Creek has three beautiful outdoor pool complexes for owners and guests located in our Cottages, Townes and Estates neighborhoods. If you’re looking to venture beyond home base, a quick 15-minute ride will take you to Yorktown Beach, a two-acre stretch of sand along the scenic Yorktown River that includes a fishing pier and grassy areas to enjoy a picnic lunch!

Witness Local Wildlife.

Get up close and personal with the flora and fauna of Virginia. Catch (and release) fish at Waller Mill Park, or head to the Williamsburg Botanical Garden, where you can stroll through a butterfly garden and surround yourself with beautiful native flowers and herbs. You can also check out the Living Forest Interpretive Trail, a children’s nature trail that features interpretive signs for youth and families of all ages.

Take a Tour.

Have you ever wanted to visit a 100-acre lavender farm? Or hop on a segway and tour historic monuments? How about venturing down the haunted streets of Yorktown for an epic ghost tour, or simply treating yourself to a private walking tour that caters to your family’s schedule? These are all fantastic ways to make your trip to the Historic Triangle meaningful and memorable.

Go Golfing.

Fast becoming one of the nation’s top golf destinations, Williamsburg, Virginia, boasts more than a dozen courses designed by some of the most notable architects, including Pete Dye, Rees Jones, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Arnold Palmer, Curtis Strange, John LeFoy and Nicklaus Design Associates. Here are our three favorites.

Have an Adventure.

Looking to live life adventurously? Try Go Ape, a unique and highly interactive treetop adventure course made up of 38 crossings and obstacles which include, rope ladders, net bridges, trapezes, Tarzan swings and zip lines. There are adventure options for all ages, and we guarantee your kids will talk about it through the end of 2019!
