Beat the ‘Burg Heat this Summer

Between the scorching temperatures, high humidity and sunburn, it has been one long, hot summer! This weather can make it hard to get motivated to leave the comfort of your air-conditioning.

While it may seem easier to just throw the (sweat-drenched) towel in, King’s Creek still wants to help you make this summer count. So we’ve come up with a few tips for keeping things fun while you beat the heat!

Wait ‘til nightfall.

One way to avoid the intense heat is to wait until the sun goes down. This will allow the temperature to drop and will help avoid the harmful effects of a high UV index. Williamsburg has some fantastic options to make your summer nights even cooler.

Visit the broad cliffs of York River for a beautiful evening. Get away from the city lights and embrace the perfect location for observing starry constellations. Stargazing is a simple and free activity for your itinerary, and definitely worth the experience.

  • Summer Concerts

Concerts are the perfect nighttime activity, as most of the Williamsburg summer series shows begin just as the sun is starting to set. Come let the music fill your soul at the Summer Breeze Concert Series, Summer Nights Live and the Sounds of Summer shows.

When the sun goes down, the spirits come out! Explore one of the Williamsburg Ghost Tours for a scary fun night. We all know Williamsburg has a lot of history, but the ghost tours get you in touch with the past from an entirely new perspective. Make this your next spooky adventure for an engaging and fun evening in Williamsburg.

Find fun indoor activities.

Summertime does not mean you have to suffer through the unbearable outdoor heat. There are great activities that you can do alongside your friends, family and your beloved AC unit.

  • Tour a Museum

Museums are a great way to keep busy while taking advantage of being inside! Colonial Williamsburg has some great outdoor sites, but the indoor attractions are definitely worth experiencing! Stop by the Basset Hall, the Williamsburg home of John D. Rockefeller Jr., the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum for exhibits rich with history and culture.

Busch gardens may be most famously known for its thrilling roller coasters, but they are also home to some incredible performances. Several stages host shows with America’s Got Talent stars in Summer Nights Live, Irish Dancing with Celtic Fyre, or German music and dance in Oktoberzest.

The Colonial Escape Room is the perfect way to escape the heat. Test your wits by searching for clues and solving mind-puzzling obstacles. This is the perfect indoor activity for you and your friends or family!

Cool off in the water.

Going for a swim or a splash is a great way to cool down your body temperature (not to mention it’s a ton of fun!). If you’re looking for places to cool down, we have the perfect recommendations here in Williamsburg.

If you’re ready to cool down with a SPLASH, head on over to Water Country USA! Float along the lazy river, or chase a bigger thrill with their mega-slides. Whether you’re looking for an exciting experience or relaxation by the water, this is a wonderful location for the whole family to enjoy.

Upper County is an immense park, with 91 acres of fun. With a 25-meter swimming pool and a toddler pool, this is the perfect park for a refreshing fix. When you need a break from the pool, check out playgrounds, sand volleyball, basketball courts, trails and picnic shelters.

If you’re looking for a place to have a good swim, head on over to Yorktown Beach! Stretching across two acres along the York River, this is the perfect location for your next beach day. This spot is complete with a fishing pier, picnic areas and shower facilities.
