Ways to Save: Free Fun in Williamsburg!

American novelist Carson McCullers once said: “We are torn between nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange… we are homesick most for the places we have never known.”

You want to travel. You need to vacation. Traveling challenges and expands your world like nothing else can—vacations are about discovery, finding meaning and forming a connection with other people and ways of life. It’s your absolute responsibility to go away every once in a while so you can return home enlightened, enriched and experienced.

Vacations, however, are expensive. But please don’t let that stop you! King’s Creek Plantation wants you in Williamsburg, so we’ve made a list of activities that are not only free, but seriously fun!

Go On Foot or Two Wheels

Williamsburg has some truly beautiful walking and biking trails. Gather the family to review your options (The Colonial Parkway / Greensprings Greenway Interpretive Trail / Historic Jamestowne Bike Trail / Virginia Capital Trail / Powhatan Creek Trail), hold a vote, and go on a walk or bike ride through the Historic Triangle’s most peaceful nature spots. It will give you a different perspective of the area, and it’s a great chance to spend time talking, laughing and bonding with the people you love most.

Rock Out

Perhaps one of the most charming things about Williamsburg is its free Summer Concert Series. Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown has Sounds of Summer concerts on Thursdays, and Merchants Square has its Summer Breeze Concert Series. If you arrive at 6:30 to Merchants Square, the kids can enjoy face painting and ice cream while you wait for the music to begin at 7. There’s nothing better than relaxing as the air cools down and tunes turn up after a busy day of fun.

Set Sail

Take a free, 15-minute ride to view the shore on the Jamestown Ferry. If you were drawn to the Historic Triangle because if its rich history, then it should be easy to daydream about what the first settlers might have seen and felt as they pulled up to land. Plus, boats are fun!

Take in A Film

In the summer months, you can catch a free movie (with free popcorn, too!) on Prince George St. every Sunday evening. Spread out on a blanket under the stars to catch hits like Zootopia, Star Wars, Minions, Maleficent and Inside Out. This is the perfect family activity for winding down after a great weekend!

People-Watch

Admit it—sometimes it’s nice to take a seat and observe the interactions of others. You can learn a lot about a city by studying how people interact with it, and there’s plenty to see in Colonial Williamsburg. You’ll see folks in authentic Colonial dress and watch people wander amongst the shops and taverns, taking carriage rides and enjoying local attractions. As writer Cody Delistraty says in his article “The Art of People Watching,” “…people are the cogs, and it is only through removing oneself from the machine that one can see the whole splendid thing working away.”

Plus, when you stay with us as a guest or a member, there is always something fun and free happening on the property! Whether your budget is big or small, reap all the benefits of travel at King’s Creek Plantation in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Happy traveling!
