You’ve probably heard of Williamsburg. But take a brief, scenic drive along the Colonial Parkway, and you’ll discover another branch of the Historic Triangle. Welcome to Yorktown!
Yorktown is most remembered as the site of the pivotal victory in the Revolutionary War. The triumph is commemorated in Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down), a song in the musical Hamilton.

This museum serves as an exceptional introduction to Yorktown and the American Revolution. Explore the journey to nationhood through films and living history exhibits, including a Revolution-era farm and Continental Army encampment.
Yorktown Battlefield
In October 1781, British troops surrendered to American and French armies, led by General George Washington. This was the official beginning of the end of our nation’s fight for independence.
Park rangers are available for a guided walking tour of Yorktown Battlefield, or you can take a self-guided tour from the comfort of your car. A variety of cannons and fortifications are still present.
You should also check out the Moore House, where surrender terms were negotiated, and the Nelson House, home to Governor Thomas Nelson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence!
Historic Yorktown Cruises
Yorktown Sailing Charters presents an exciting history lesson on the water with the Schooner Alliance and the Schooner Serenity. Sail the same waters as Captain John Smith, and even help set sail, if you desire. Cruises depart from the Riverwalk Landing Pier.
