Why Williamsburg Winters are Wonderful
The New York Times just published an article featuring the top 52 places to visit in 2019. Williamsburg placed at no. 12, and for good reason.
Williamsburg, the Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown are the sites of some of our country’s most important and defining moments. This year, the Historic Triangle will observe the 400th anniversary of major historical events, including the arrival of the first African slaves to North America, the first recorded Thanksgiving in the New World, the recruitment of English women in large numbers, and the first representative assembly in America. These events continue to have a huge influence on America, and you can have a front-row seat in our country’s only living history museum.
Though winters are traditionally all about hibernating, these programs and events aren’t happening anywhere else in the world. This winter calls for a special trip to Williamsburg.
This year marks 40 years of African-American historical interpretation in Williamsburg. In a fascinating and necessary look into our past, guests and the local community are invited to experience special programming that remembers and honors the contributions of African-American men and women in 18th-century Williamsburg.
This February, Colonial Williamsburg will honor Black History Month with events that thoughtfully examine the lives of real people who lived here. Actor interpreters tell the stories and illustrate the contributions of African slaves in the 18th century. Jamestown was America’s first permanent English colony, and though its history is now over 400 years old, stepping back in time never felt so real.
In addition to permanent exhibitions like recreations of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia in 1607, a colonist’s fort and a Powhatan Indian village, Jamestown is bringing guests something very special this year. Special yearlong exhibit TENACITY uses personal stories, interactives, artifacts, primary sources and images to rebuild the untold stories of women who lived, struggled and contributed during this time.
What was once the Yorktown Victory Center is now the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown–a totally reinvented, reimagined space with brand-new indoor and outdoor exhibits that tell the story of the American Revolution like no one ever has. If you like history and drama, you will be totally engrossed by the story of how our nation was founded. And you’ll be standing on the very spot where it all started.
